Top 10 Things Parents Should Know Before Buying Their Child a Drum Kit

September 14, 2025

So, your kid wants to play drums? Awesome! (And yes, a little noisy, but trust us, it’s worth it.) Buying a first kit can feel overwhelming, especially if you don’t know a snare from a tom. Don’t worry, we got you. We have helped hundreds of drummers find their perfect kit for over ten years. Here are 10 things every parent should know before picking out a drum kit.

1. Consider Your Budget

Quality used kits (like the ones at Drum Flip) often sound better than budget new ones—and they stretch your dollars further. Set a budget that feels right for your family, knowing you’ll always have the option to upgrade or trade up later. Drum Flip offers lifetime trade-ins. So, if you want to upgrade, we got you. You can check out our used selection here.

2. Acoustic vs. Electronic

  • Acoustic: Big, classic drum sound… and big volume.
  • Electronic: Quieter (headphones for the win), budget-friendly, smaller footprint, often comes with built-in practice tools.

3. Right Size for Growing Drummers

  • Kids under 10? A junior kit works best.
  • Teens or taller kids? They’ll need a full-size kit.
  • Small spaces? Jazz or bop kits sound great and don’t take over the room.

4. Start Simple

No need for a mountain of drums. A kick, snare, one tom, hi-hats, and a crash/ride is plenty to get started.

5. Cymbals Count

Beginner kits often include starter cymbals that can sound… rough. Upgrading even one makes a huge difference.

6. Expect Wear and Tear

Sticks break. Heads dent. It’s normal. Budget a little extra for replacements every few months.

7. Volume Is Real

Acoustic drums are loud. Solutions: practice pads, mesh heads, low-volume cymbals, or consider electronic.

8. The Seat Matters

A drum throne (the seat) isn’t just a stool. It helps posture, comfort, and practice time. Worth the investment.

9. Lessons Help Kids Stick With It

Even a few lessons with a good teacher make practice fun. Many kids quit not from lack of interest, but because they don’t know how to practice.

10. More Than Just Music

Drumming teaches coordination, discipline, confidence, and listening skills. It’s building confidence and growth disguised as fun.

🎨 Bonus: Color Counts
If your kid loves how it looks, they’ll be more excited to play. Let them help pick the finish.
